Smithfield Foods

Smithfield Foods is the largest producer of pork products in the world, and with a strong focus on customer service, they began looking at ways they could service their customers better than ever before.

Smithfield was previously using a 3rd party provider for their distribution operations in the Indianapolis market, but recognized that they had enough volume and demand to justify operating their own dedicated facility.

Tippmann Group worked closely with the Smithfield team to design the new 419,000 square foot facility, in order to handle their direct store delivery (DSD), packaged meats business and case-pick operations in the most efficient way possible.

The new multi-temperature distribution facility features more than 200,000 square feet of cooler space, along with 81,000 square feet of freezer storage, and an additional 40,000 square feet of swing rooms. It also includes a 64,000 square foot shipping dock, pick-tunnels, machine room, dedicated maintenance & material handling areas and a 2-story office.
