One
of the largest food and drug retailers in
North America, Safeway Inc. has a strong track
record of expansion and acquisition with more
than 1,600 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
By 1999, the company had outgrown its Denver-area
distribution facility, so Safeway began looking
for a firm to design and build a new refrigerated
warehouse.
The
Safeway team had already invested substantially
in a well-planned design, but the budget and
timing for the project just weren't working
out. Safeway talked to Tippmann and became
confident that Tippmann's specialized expertise
and local relationships could give them an
outstanding facility in spite of the obstacles
— a tight time frame amid a boomtown
market.
The
new 135,000 square foot facility is located
on Safeway's distribution campus, adjacent
to their existing facility, and features a
modern, state-of-the-art computer-controlled
refrigeration system. Arnie Collins, P.E.
for Safeway notes, "We wanted to establish
a long-term relationship with a company that
demonstrated greater sophistication and expertise
in this area, and that's what we were able
to accomplish with Tippmann."
