Following a successful design/build project
in Brighton, Michigan, Gordon Food Service
was looking to add a new distribution center
in the southeast, so GFS executives came to
Tippmann Group again, expecting another successful
project.
Due
to a tight time frame related to their new
business opportunity, GFS chose to purchase
an existing warehouse building shell, as opposed
to starting a new construction project from
the ground up. Tippmann’s design team
then went to work on the facility in Greenville,
South Carolina.
The
building shell had no docks and was originally
built with concrete walls, which would not
be conducive to holding temperature in a building
needing freezer space. Tippmann Group removed
the concrete walls and replaced them with
insulated wall panels and added an ammonia
refrigeration system to the building.
A
new dock also had to be added to the facility,
and it was designed with an open floorplan,
which provides direct access from the refrigerated
dock to the warehouse’s cooler portion
of the building.
This
is one of two GFS projects that were being
built simultaneously by Tippmann Group. The
other is a new distribution center in Ocala,
Florida.
